Carving Elbows with Tyler Chorlton

Leaning into a turn on a nice snow plowed hill, pushing your elbow against the snow, we can guarantee that you will be the talk of the mountain after learning Tyler Chorlton's Elbow Carve. Tyler has been creating a new way to innovate your riding as a snowboarder.

After his pro- days, Tyler found something for all riders to catch the thrill of stomping cool tricks on the mountain, but it doesn’t require an age limit or a jump. The simplicity behind the Elbow Carve is what makes the trick for all riders and now you can get out on the slopes with a wicked new style as you glide through the mountain traffic.

The UK snowboarder has a lot more going on than just changing the way you ride from the Elbow Carve to PAX Life and joining the Rusty Toothbrush crew, Tyler Chorlton is leaving his own footprint in the powder.

How did the elbow carve come about?

“I was playing around with Jake Simpson, who films a little with Rusty Toothbrush, they did a really cool movie called Mass Culture that I highly recommend, this was in 2014 I think and Jake came over to Andorra for a junior freeride contest and that day we just started doing elbow carves, and I thought there was so much potential in this move, you can do all these combinations and that’s what I have been doing for the past few years,” said Tyler Chorlton.

Do you claim the Elbow Carve as your creation or addition to the sport of snowboarding?

“Not really but, I am defiantly innovating it, taking it to new places. I hope I can leave something behind when I leave and leave something that people can enjoy, it is pretty fun to do, it’s not like this unattainable triple or quadruple cork which kids are doing today, it is something that a 50-year-old dude can try, I have 50 years old in my camps and I teach them and they can do it, now their snowboarding is revived for them because they have this new trick they can do,” said Tyler Chorlton.

What is the story behind the start of you snowboarding?

“In Andorra, it’s a small country between France and Spain, a tax-free place in the middle of the mountains. A friend of mine, who I am still friends with now, my friend Oliver, I just wanted to hang out with him and I picked up a board as well and that was it. He was a bit more of a free rider and I was more obsessed with the freestyle aspect. Then I went in that direction and started doing a few contests and I got a little bit of prize money, which allowed me to travel, to do a bigger contest in the Alps. Then I kind of moved my way up from that and got into the film scene,” said Tyler Chorlton.

How did you get involved with the Rusty Toothbrush Crew?

“They had been playing around and doing some really cool stuff for a few years and I think it was with DC, they planned a little trip to Andorra and I was doing a little bit of team managing for Electric and the time, Electric Europe just looking after the team and Alex was one of the boys on the team and I was asked to show them around to have a good time and we got along really well and then straight away the next season we were filming together and we linked together really well,” said Tyler Chorlton.

What were your days riding professionally like?

“They were heavy, heavy on the body and I guess to be honest the Elbow Carving is almost as heavy on the body but it is just in different places on the body, the days with Pirates Production, we would have some insane days, wake up at 6 am, drive for 3 hours, hike for 3 hours, build a jump, you’d have time for 3 hits and then hike back before the lift closes,” said Tyler Chorlton.

What has it been like doing these elbows carve camps?

“It is really awesome I love seeing people’s progression and the stoke on their faces when they learn something new and that’s where I feel like I am giving back to snowboarding,” said Tyler Chorlton.

What is your main objective of PAX Life?

“For me, I need it in my life it helps my body relax and helps my mind from going overboard, I can smoke anymore, I just feel rough every time I smoke, and I haven’t actually smoked in 5 years actually, and I just started getting into vaporizing side of things and defiantly found that PAX was way ahead of the game,” said Tyler Chorlton.
